Aziz wants report on new building codes in one month
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz directed the Ministry of Housing And Works on Tuesday to prepare the draft of revised building codes within one month.
He assigned the task to a committee of experts headed by the National Engineering Services of Pakistan (NESPAK) while presiding over a high-level meeting, also attended by Housing Minister Syed Safwanullah, Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao and CDA Chairman Kamran Lashari.
The prime minister said that the government will not ban the construction of multi-storey buildings. He directed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to strictly enforce building laws, and improve its inspection and supervision mechanisms – especially the examination of construction material and building design – to avoid substandard construction. The CDA should engage lawyers to ensure enforcement of the building codes, he said.
The prime minister directed the CDA chairman to exercise a more interactive policy and provide information to the public about buildings and housing societies not up to the organisation’s construction standards.
The CDA submitted a proposal for the rehabilitation of a kachi abadi in zone-4. The meeting decided to submit the plan to the federal cabinet.
